This multi-national manufacturer had already achieved substantial cost savings through innovative approaches in health care plan management. The next piece of savings would come with actually improving the health of the workforce. This meant that multiple groups - benefits, compensation, and occupational health management - who normally have minimal connection, needed to come together to get results. The Executive Sponsor partnered with SCG to launch a cross-functional team to re-calibrate objectives and metrics while designing a program that generated more wellness to support the demanding operation.
The newly formed team had the difficult task of collecting health data among a workforce that was generally suspicious of all the parts of the system designed to support them: doctors, insurance companies, and HR. Meanwhile, the more health and insurance data that was reviewed, the more senior leaders got a glimpse of the latent health risk at a time when productivity was paramount to meeting critical business targets. Health data collection continued and became the basis of wellness programming that increased usage of primary care physicians, compliance to treatment protocols, and that decreased catastrophic claims expense. Within the first year, the team delivered unparalleled health care cost containment in their industry and increased awareness of the health risk factors that had previously gone unchecked.
